A painted mural is a large artwork applied directly to a wall, ceiling, or other permanent surface.
The phrase is somewhat redundant—murals are by definition painted or otherwise applied to architectural surfaces—but it distinguishes hand-painted work from murals created with tiles, mosaics, or digital printing: The community center commissioned a painted mural depicting local history.
