overwatching

Keeping protective watch

Overwatching means keeping protective surveillance over someone or something, typically from an elevated or advantageous position.

The term appears most often in military contexts, where one unit overwatches another during movement: The squad on the ridge was overwatching our advance.

In tactical shooter video games, overwatching describes covering teammates or holding a position to engage enemies who enter your line of sight.
