taking point
First into danger
Taking point means assuming the lead position, especially in a military patrol where the point person walks ahead to scout for danger.
More broadly, it describes taking charge of an initiative or being first to face risk: She's taking point on the merger negotiations.
The phrase implies both leadership and exposure to whatever comes first.
