overtipping

Too generous tips

Overtipping is leaving a gratuity larger than customary or expected.

The term usually implies excess—tipping 50% when 20% is standard, or tipping where none is expected.

Someone might overtip from generosity, guilt, social anxiety, or unfamiliarity with local customs: I always overtip at my regular coffee shop.
