overcrank

Speed up camera

To overcrank is to run a film camera faster than normal speed, so that when the footage plays back at standard speed, the action appears slowed down.

The term comes from the era of hand-cranked cameras, when turning the crank faster captured more frames per second.

They overcranked the explosion to capture every detail in slow motion.

The opposite is undercrank, which speeds up action.
