overcompress

Pack too tightly

To overcompress is to compress something too much, reducing quality or causing damage.

In audio and video, overcompression produces artifacts—muddy sound, pixelated images, or loss of dynamic range: The podcast was so overcompressed it sounded flat.

Data files can be overcompressed to the point of corruption.

The term applies anywhere excessive compression degrades the original.
