outpatient surgery
Same-day medical operation
Outpatient surgery is a medical procedure performed without an overnight hospital stay—the patient arrives, undergoes the operation, and goes home the same day.
Also called day surgery or ambulatory surgery.
The term distinguishes these procedures from inpatient surgery, which requires hospitalization: It used to mean a week in the hospital, but now it's outpatient surgery.
