closed primaries

Members-only nomination votes

Closed primaries are primary elections in which only voters registered with a particular party can participate in selecting that party's candidates.

A registered Democrat cannot vote in the Republican primary, and vice versa.

This contrasts with open primaries, where voters may participate regardless of party affiliation.

Several states have moved from closed primaries to open systems to increase voter participation.
