closed primary
Members-only candidate selection
A closed primary is an election in which only registered members of a political party can vote to select that party's candidates.
If you're registered as an independent or with a different party, you can't participate: In states with closed primaries, independents must register with a party to vote.
Contrasts with open primaries, where any voter may participate regardless of party affiliation.
