offside call
Flag for positioning
An offside call is a referee's ruling that a player has violated positioning rules—in soccer, being closer to the goal than the second-to-last defender when the ball is played; in hockey or football, crossing a line before permitted.
Offside calls are often controversial, especially when margins are tight: The offside call negated what would have been the winning goal.
