off-side
Ahead too soon
Off-side (also offside) is a violation in sports when a player is positioned illegally ahead of the ball or beyond a boundary line.
In soccer, a player is off-side if closer to the goal than both the ball and the second-to-last defender when receiving a pass.
In American football, it means crossing the line of scrimmage before the snap: The defense was called for off-side.
The adjective describes this position: an off-side call.
