off-key

Not quite right

Off-key describes singing or playing that misses the correct musical pitch—sharp, flat, or wavering: Her off-key rendition made everyone wince.

The term extends to anything that feels wrong or discordant: His jokes were off-key for the somber occasion.

The opposite is on-key, though in-tune is more common.
