odorant

Substance producing aroma

An odorant is a substance that produces a smell—specifically, a chemical compound capable of stimulating olfactory receptors.

The term appears most often in technical contexts: perfumers work with odorants, and gas companies add odorants to otherwise odorless natural gas so leaks can be detected.

The distinctive odorant in natural gas is mercaptan.
