nuclear contamination

Invisible atomic poisoning

Nuclear contamination is the presence of radioactive material where it shouldn't be—in soil, water, air, food, or living tissue.

It results from accidents at power plants, weapons testing, improper waste disposal, or industrial mishaps.

Unlike chemical contamination, nuclear contamination continues emitting harmful radiation until the material decays, which can take anywhere from days to thousands of years: The Chernobyl exclusion zone remains under nuclear contamination decades later.
