nuclear-free zones
Weapons-banned territories
Nuclear-free zones are areas where nuclear weapons, nuclear power plants, or both are prohibited by law or treaty.
The term usually applies to regions established by international agreement—such as Latin America or the South Pacific—where nations pledge not to develop, test, or station nuclear weapons.
Cities or countries may also declare themselves nuclear-free as a political statement: New Zealand has been a nuclear-free zone since 1987.
