no-knock

Without warning beforehand

No-knock describes a type of search warrant or police raid that authorizes officers to enter a property without first announcing their presence or purpose.

Standard procedure requires police to knock and identify themselves before forcing entry; a no-knock warrant waives this requirement when authorities believe evidence might be destroyed or officers endangered.

The no-knock raid went wrong when police entered the wrong apartment.
