night latch
Spring-loaded door lock
A night latch is a door lock that fastens automatically when the door closes, with a beveled bolt that can be opened from inside without a key but requires a key from outside.
Common on front doors of houses and apartments: I heard the night latch click behind me.
The name suggests security for nighttime, though the lock works around the clock.
