nerve roots
Spine's neural anchors
Nerve roots are the bundles of nerve fibers that emerge from the spinal cord and exit through openings in the vertebrae.
Each spinal nerve has two roots: a sensory root carrying signals toward the brain, and a motor root carrying signals to muscles.
Compression of nerve roots—from a herniated disc or bone spur—causes radiating pain, numbness, or weakness in the areas those nerves supply: The MRI showed a compressed nerve root at L5.
