naval convoy
Warship-protected shipping group
A naval convoy is a group of ships traveling together for protection, typically merchant or transport vessels escorted by warships.
The formation allows military vessels to defend multiple civilian ships against submarines, aircraft, or surface raiders: Allied naval convoys crossed the Atlantic during World War II.
The term also applies to the protective operation itself.
