natural consequences
Actions cause effects
Natural consequences are the outcomes that follow naturally from an action without any intervention or punishment imposed by others.
A child who refuses to wear a coat gets cold; someone who skips meals gets hungry.
The term appears frequently in parenting discussions, where allowing natural consequences is contrasted with artificial punishments: We let natural consequences teach him—when he left his bike out, it rusted.
The approach assumes experience is a more effective teacher than imposed discipline.
