national labs
Federal science facilities
National labs are government-funded research facilities, typically focused on science, energy, or defense.
In the United States, the term usually refers to the seventeen laboratories overseen by the Department of Energy, including Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, and Lawrence Livermore: She got a postdoc at one of the national labs.
These institutions tackle large-scale projects—nuclear weapons, particle physics, climate modeling—that exceed the resources of universities or private industry.
