national banks

Country-chartered financial institutions

National banks are banks chartered by a federal government rather than a state or regional authority.

In the United States, national banks operate under federal oversight and typically include "National" or "N.A." (National Association) in their names.

The term also refers to central banks that manage a country's monetary policy and currency: The national bank raised interest rates to combat inflation.
