narrow transcription
Precise sound notation
A narrow transcription is a phonetic transcription that captures fine details of pronunciation—exact vowel qualities, aspiration, nasalization, and other subtle features.
It uses more symbols and diacritics than a broad transcription, which records only the basic sounds that distinguish meaning.
Linguists use narrow transcriptions when studying accent variation or speech disorders: The narrow transcription showed she aspirated her initial /p/.
