broad transcription
Simplified sound notation
Broad transcription is a way of writing speech sounds that captures only the significant distinctions in a language, ignoring finer phonetic details.
It uses slashes rather than brackets: /kæt/ for "cat." The opposite is narrow transcription, which records precise acoustic details.
Broad transcription is practical for dictionaries and language learning, where exact pronunciation varies by speaker anyway.
