négociant
French wine trader
A négociant is a wine merchant who buys grapes, juice, or finished wine from growers, then blends, ages, bottles, and sells under their own label.
The term is French and appears most often in discussions of Burgundy and Champagne: The négociant sources from dozens of small vineyards across the region.
Distinguished from estate-bottled wines, where the same property grows and produces.
