mudpuppies

Gilled water amphibians

Mudpuppies are large aquatic salamanders native to eastern North America, living permanently in lakes, rivers, and streams.

Unlike most salamanders, they retain their feathery external gills throughout life, never losing their larval features.

They're nocturnal bottom-dwellers, hiding under rocks and debris by day: We found a mudpuppy under a submerged log.

Also called waterdogs.
