mother plants
Cloning donor specimens
Mother plants are mature specimens kept specifically for taking cuttings to propagate new plants.
Rather than being grown to flower or fruit, they're maintained in a vegetative state as a continuous source of genetically identical clones: She keeps several mother plants in the back room for her nursery business.
The term is common in horticulture and cannabis cultivation.
