missed shot
Off the mark
A missed shot is an attempt that fails to hit its target—whether in basketball, photography, or gunfire.
The phrase emphasizes the failure rather than the attempt: That was a missed shot at the buzzer.
In billiards and pool, a missed shot may end your turn.
Figuratively, a missed shot is any squandered opportunity: Not applying for that job was a missed shot.
