misplacement

Put somewhere incorrect

Misplacement is putting something in the wrong place, or the state of having been put there.

Unlike losing, misplacement implies the object exists somewhere—just not where it belongs or where you can find it: The misplacement of my keys made me late.

The word also applies to abstract things: a misplacement of trust, a misplacement of priorities.
