mislocating

Putting somewhere incorrect

Mislocating is putting something in the wrong place or failing to identify where something is.

You might mislocate your keys by setting them on an unfamiliar shelf, or mislocate a city by placing it in the wrong state on a map.

The word covers both physical displacement and errors in determining location: I keep mislocating my glasses or The GPS was mislocating our position by several miles.
