A minor league team is a professional sports team that operates below the highest level of competition, serving as a developmental organization for major league clubs.
In baseball especially, minor league teams form a tiered system where players refine their skills before potential promotion: He spent three years on a minor league team before getting called up.
The term extends figuratively to anything considered second-tier or not quite ready for the big time.
