microinsults
Small verbal jabs
Microinsults are subtle communications that convey rudeness, insensitivity, or demeaning messages toward marginalized groups.
Unlike overt slurs, they often appear unintentional—a backhanded compliment, a dismissive tone, or an assumption that undermines competence: You're so articulate said with surprise to a Black professional.
The term emerged from psychology research on microaggressions, describing everyday indignities that accumulate over time.
