mental exercise

Thought-based training activity

Mental exercise refers to activities that challenge and stimulate the brain, much like physical exercise works the body.

These include puzzles, memory games, learning new skills, or any cognitive task that requires focused attention and mental effort.

Doing crosswords is my daily mental exercise.

The term is sometimes used more loosely for any demanding thought process: Trying to follow his argument was quite the mental exercise.
