melodic lines
Sung sequential notes
Melodic lines are sequences of musical notes that form a distinct, recognizable tune—the part of music you might hum or whistle.
A piece may have a single melodic line or several woven together, as in counterpoint.
Composers speak of melodic lines as horizontal movement through time, contrasted with harmony's vertical stacking of simultaneous notes: The violin carries the main melodic line while the piano provides accompaniment.
