medical coma
Deliberate therapeutic unconsciousness
A medical coma is a state of deep unconsciousness deliberately induced by doctors, typically using barbiturates or other sedatives.
Unlike a coma caused by injury or illness, a medical coma is controlled and reversible—used to protect the brain during severe trauma, reduce swelling, or manage intractable seizures: They put him in a medical coma after the accident.
Also called an induced coma or medically induced coma.
