median strips
Highway lane separators
Median strips are the dividing barriers or landscaped areas that separate opposing lanes of traffic on a highway or divided road.
They serve to prevent head-on collisions and provide space for emergency stops or turns.
Median strips may be paved, planted with grass or shrubs, or fitted with concrete barriers depending on the road's design and traffic speed.
The term is primarily American; British English favors central reservation.
