mail ship

Letter-carrying boat

A mail ship is a vessel contracted to carry postal mail between ports, especially on transoceanic routes before air travel became standard.

These ships operated on regular schedules to ensure reliable delivery: The mail ship arrived from Liverpool every fortnight.

Many also carried passengers and cargo, with "Royal Mail Ship" (RMS) designating British vessels under postal contract.
