magnetic core
Coil's iron center
A magnetic core is a piece of magnetic material—usually iron or ferrite—placed inside a coil or transformer to concentrate and strengthen the magnetic field.
The core dramatically increases efficiency in electromagnets, inductors, and transformers.
In early computing, magnetic cores were tiny rings that stored binary data by magnetization direction; this is why computer memory was called core memory and why a system failure is still called a core dump.
