mackinaws

Heavy plaid jackets

Mackinaws are heavy woolen blankets or the short, double-breasted coats made from similar material, originally associated with the upper Great Lakes region.

The coat, often in plaid patterns, was standard cold-weather gear for outdoorsmen and lumberjacks: He threw on his old mackinaw and headed out to split wood.

A mackinaw is also a flat-bottomed boat used on the Great Lakes.
