machine gun nest
Defensive firing station
A machine gun nest is a fortified position for a machine gun and its crew, typically dug in or protected by sandbags, earthworks, or natural cover.
The term evokes defensive warfare—soldiers firing from concealment at advancing enemy troops: The platoon took heavy casualties trying to knock out the machine gun nest.
Also called a machine gun emplacement.
