yahoos

Crude, unruly bunch

Yahoos are crude, uncouth, or rowdy people—the sort who might start a fight at a bar or shout obscenities at a sporting event.

The word comes from Jonathan Swift's *Gulliver's Travels*, where Yahoos are brutish humanoid creatures contrasted with the rational Houyhnhnms.

A bunch of yahoos were tailgating in the parking lot.

The term is mildly contemptuous but often used with humor.
