log chute
Lumber transport channel
A log chute is a channel or trough used to transport logs downhill, typically from a forest to a river or mill.
Built of wood, metal, or carved into terrain, chutes use gravity and sometimes running water to move timber efficiently across difficult landscapes: The logs shot down the chute into the millpond.
Log chutes were essential to 19th-century logging operations before trucks and railroads.
