locked wards
Restricted psychiatric floors
Locked wards are hospital units where patients cannot leave freely—doors are secured and exit requires staff authorization.
Most commonly found in psychiatric facilities, they house patients deemed a danger to themselves or others, or those committed involuntarily.
The term also applies to secured sections in general hospitals for patients requiring close monitoring: She was transferred to the locked ward after the suicide attempt.
