local maximum
Nearby highest point
A local maximum is a point where a value is higher than all nearby values, though not necessarily the highest overall.
In mathematics, it's where a function peaks before declining again: The curve has a local maximum at x = 3.
The term extends to any situation with multiple peaks—a stock price might hit several local maxima before reaching its absolute maximum.
Contrast with global maximum, which is the highest point anywhere in the range.
