lions den
Hostile territory metaphor
A lion's den is the lair where a lion lives, but the phrase almost always appears figuratively to mean a dangerous or hostile environment.
To enter the lion's den is to voluntarily face opposition or confrontation, often alone: She walked into the lion's den of the board meeting without any allies.
The image comes from the biblical story of Daniel, who survived a night among lions.
