flood story
Ancient inundation myth
A flood story is a narrative, usually mythological or religious, in which a great deluge destroys most of humanity while a chosen few survive.
The biblical account of Noah's ark is the most familiar example in Western culture, but flood stories appear across many traditions—Gilgamesh, Hindu scripture, Greek myth.
Scholars debate whether these reflect shared ancient memory or independent responses to local catastrophes.
