line call
In or out?
A line call is a judgment in racket sports—tennis, badminton, volleyball—about whether a ball landed inside or outside the boundary lines.
Line calls determine whether a shot is in or out, and disputed calls often prompt appeals to officials or electronic review systems: The line call went against her on match point.
By extension, any close or contestable decision: It was a line call whether to proceed with the merger.
