lift operator

Runs the chairlift

A lift operator is a person who runs a ski lift, responsible for loading and unloading passengers, monitoring safety, and stopping the lift when necessary.

The term also applies to someone who operates an elevator, though this occupation has largely disappeared as elevators became automated.

In British English, where elevator is called a lift, the term covers both meanings without ambiguity.
