legations

Foreign ministry offices

Legations is the plural of legation, a diplomatic mission or the building housing it—typically one rank below an embassy.

Before the mid-twentieth century, countries often maintained legations rather than embassies in less important capitals: The American legation in Tangier was established in 1821.

The term also refers to the staff of such a mission collectively.
