legal statute

Codified legislative rule

A legal statute is a law enacted by a legislative body—Congress, a state legislature, or parliament.

Statutes are written laws, distinguished from case law made by judges and common law derived from tradition.

The phrase is somewhat redundant, since statutes are by definition legal instruments: The legal statute prohibits discrimination in hiring.
